San José used to be the safest big city in the nation, but the sad reality is that our city – like the rest of California – is experiencing an alarming increase in crime – and our residents feel increasingly vulnerable.
Unfortunately, well-intentioned but shortsighted laws like Proposition 47 must shoulder some of the blame for this spike in crime. By downgrading an array of serious offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, this law has invited repeat offenders to brazenly commit crimes without fear of consequences — and the effects are being felt in our communities.

Through my conversations with concerned citizens on the campaign trail, I see the strain this puts on our families, our communities and our local businesses. Retail theft is costing California taxpayers billions of dollars every year and undermining our sense of safety.
The truth is, we don’t have to choose between mass incarceration and giving up on enforcing our laws. If we work together to advocate for a better tomorrow for our city and our state, we can reform Proposition 47 and demand safe communities for all of our families. But to make that bright tomorrow a reality, we need to speak up for common sense reforms today.
